The London Intl Ska Festival 2018 roundup

Thank you everyone who performed, worked and came to The London Intl Ska Festival’s 30th anniversary.

Despite the festival being the most stressful and hardest year to put together, it has been my favourite edition of the festival. Judging by the feedback you feel the same way.

The highlight for me was seeing people from 53 countries attending, regular and new faces alike. It was wonderful to see all of you. We live in what can be a pretty horrible world and it fills me with pride that we all come together with no prejudice to celebrate music we love and share each others company. A true united nations. Thank you!

Sadly, I never get to stand still for long, but performances that stuck with me included Potato 5 horn section (they were such a huge part of us starting The Loafers back in the 80s), Capone & The Bullets, Ken Boothe on the boat, Ranking Joe, plus DJ sets from Gladdy Wax, Alan Handscombe, Time Tunnel and Wrongtom (Tom we really must get the Pama/Wrongtom album out… the track I heard you play from that sounded brilliant).

It was very special having Derrick Morgan back. he, along with Laurel Aitken, Desmond Dekker, Prince Buster and Alton Ellis were mainstays of the festival back in the early years.

I caught Horace Andy singing Skylarking and Freddie Notes singing I Can’t Get No Satisfaction. Brilliant stuff. And what I got to see of the Studio One opening night with The Clarendonians, Doreen Schaffer and Otis Gayle was very special. I was honoured to be hosting The Clarendonians, Otis Gayle and Alpheus’ debut UK gigs. It’s great to have a newer artist like Alpheus making such great music now. Check out his new album just out on Liquidator Music. It is very good.

The only disappointment for me was not being well enough to perform Phoenix City All-stars – Clash In Dub show or the Pama International sets.

The Clash in Dub sound system show has been rescheduled to 11th August at the O2 Academy Islington. All tickets remain valid. If you bought a 2018 wristband and would like to come to the show please email me and let me know
If you haven’t got tickets and would like to come head to

I am also delighted to say financially the festival turned a profit this year, so has made another dent in my ongoing debts! I am still doing all the accounts but it looks like another £10,000 has been taken off the debts! This leaves the festival debt at somewhere between £55,000 and £60,000. Along way to go still but I can’t tell you how happy I am that the festival finances are once again heading in the right direction.

With this in mind, today I am putting 5 events onsale (including Thames cruises, Clash In Dub and the LISF2019 patrons ticket), as well as making the 2018 merchandise available, which I think was our most popular merchandise ever. We also have the Rudies All Around compilation, which bands have very kindly donated songs to. Buying tickets, merchandise or the music helps me to clear the debts and keep the festival surviving and growing.
